Literacy Development Programme
This is a programme which has been developed out of the 125 Fund - a fund raised in celebration of the one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Mothers' Union in 1876.
The programme is especially designed to develop literacy training initiatives for women in the third world.
Pilot schemes were started in selected dioceses in Burundi, Malawi and the Sudan. Their Mothers' Union workers were trained to instruct literacy groups. The workers received their training in Uganda and then returned to their own dioceses and set up Literacy Circles. There are currently about 160 of these circles in operation and after a careful evaluation of the programme it has been decided to extend it. At first the other dioceses in Burundi and Malawi are being added and then, as soon as finances permit, the scheme will develop in ever widening circles. (For a useful and fuller description of this programme click here.
There is a video/DVD on the Literacy Development Programme available from Enterprises and Action & Outreach for branches to borrow.

Parenting Courses
A Parenting Programme has been started by the Mothers' Union to further its continuing concern for the support of family life. These courses are designed to train facilitators who will then be able to establish parenting groups back in their own parishes. Three very successful courses have already been held in Ireland and we now have several facilitators in Dublin & Glendalough. To find out more about the training programme click here.

Simon's Accessories
Every night, 365 nights of the year, Simon Community volunteers look after the thousands of homeless in our capital city. They provide soup, tea and sandwiches, cakes, chocolates, fruit and also bring blankets, clothing and footwear.
The Dublin & Glendalough Mothers' Union have decided to support the project by knitting these articles. The patterns for two different hat types are hat 1 and for a plain hat hat 2. Scarves can be knitted to any design and a glove pattern is in M.U.M.S..

Urban Soul
Urban Soul 2009 will be held on 7 - 10 July in The Exchange (aka Trinity Church) on Gardiner Street. Teenagers and leaders from around Ireland and beyond will come together again and head onto the streets of Dublin and will serve the people of this city. The days of indiscriminate acts of kindness will go hand in hand with interactive worship, bands, cafes, guest speakers, short films and community.
Mothers' Union members are in full support of 3Rock Youth and Urban Soul 2009 and will once again help with preparation of meals to feed 250 young people who were working on street projects in Dublin. Jean Denner and Sandra Doran are in charge of our rotas for the afternoons and mornings respectively. Volunteers are needed to assist with the preparation of the packed lunches and evening meals. Please contact Jean with your name if you are interested in being involved.

The Rotunda Hospital are asking for support with parcels for immigrant mothers that arrive to hospital in labour and have nothing prepared. The parcel would be made up of blanket, babygro, vest, cardigan, hat, vaseline/sudocream, bath soap, baby sponge, cotton buds and maybe a small gift for the new mum. Each branch is being asked to supply one parcel.

Maternity Hospitals
We continue to knit hats and matinees coats for the neo natal units in the main Dublin maternity hospitals. These items are very much appreciated. At present we have sufficient stocks to supply the maternity hospitals.
We have now received a request for white casket blankets and would welcome any in sizes 14 x 14 inches, 21 x 21 inches and 28 x 28 inches. These should be forwarded to Sandra Doran |
